He received his bachelor of arts degree in biology and chemistry from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., a master's in biochemistry and his doctorate in medical microbiology, both from the University of Minnesota.

In 1974, as a graduate student, he began his medical career studying medical microbiology at Minnesota, where he specialized in HIV and AIDS research.

From 1993 to 2000, Dr. Zylka worked with the St. Louis Department of Health in various positions, including chief of corrections, where he operated an HIV clinic for prisoners.. . .
In 2000, he went into practice with Dr. Mark Scheperle at University Club Medical Inc. in Richmond Heights. Dr. Zylka was known for his work with AIDS patients, lung cancer prevention and pioneering work with Dr. John D. Davidson in hyperbaric medicine . . .
