Yesterday Nico Haupt and I attended the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) hearing at the downtown Marriott right next to Ground Zero. There's a lot to tell which I'll try to condense here.
NIST was represented by a group of men in expensive grey suits with Powerpoint presentations that contained some computer modeling displays showing the impact of the planes on the towers and measuring the heat and spread of the fires. They said they would issue their 2nd progress report in early spring, then their draft investigation report in the fall. It's now 17 months into the $16 million investigation with $5.5 million in contracts already awarded. They stated that this is the most complex analysis of a disaster ever done. They said they've received all the essential information they need and have received considerable cooperation form PA, NYC, designers, contractors, survivors and victims families.
They have obtained 436 pieces of steel from the salvage yards made of the 14 different grades that were used. This was news to me. This indicates that not all of the debris was shipped overseas. More on this later. In total, their whole approach was to study the collapse of the towers from a standpoint of engineering, as well as the safety of the work force in relation to building and fire codes for the purpose of improving future designs for skysrapers. There were maybe 10 people in attendance who lost family members in the towers. Their comments all centered around the same issues of building safety. It's worth noting that there were serious findings and recommendations after the '93 bombing which were never acted on and is cause for outrage from the families. Again, they're focusing on egregious incompetence from city agencies.
Also, there was a gentleman named Bill Bowen, who has done extensive study on the issue of fire dept. procedures and particularly the Motorola radios they had which actually endangered their lives. The FDNY had just spent $14 million on these radios which basically didn't work. He contends this was known by city officials going right up to Giuliani, yet no action was taken. He's alleging that Motorola has bribed officials around the country to use these radios and NYC isn't the only place that people have died through their use. An even more shocking revelation is that firemen have received a memo from on high stating that if they spoke to the media or any investigation without official permission, they would be fired.
A fire captain spoke at length about related issues. What stood out was his statement that in the months following the attacks, the fire dept. was blocked out of all investigation efforts. He felt that a payoff occurred to cause this. So apparently, FEMA controlled everything.
During the audience response time, Nico got up and pointed out issues about WTC7 and asked for an explanation of why the building fell in 8 seconds. The general answer he got was that it would be looked into. Then I spoke and only had time to bring out these 2 issues. I said that since the 2nd plane hit the south tower at an angle going out the other side with most of the fuel burning in the huge fireball, was NIST going to explain how just the heat from the building contents from those floors could melt the steel and cause the building to collapse. The rep replied he was aware that up to a 3rd of the fuel exploded outside the buildings and this was in full consideration. Notice I said "most" and he said "a 3rd". Then I described the film footage I saw of the north tower collapse which was shot from across the river and clearly showed the top at the beginning of it's fall.
I stated that at least 10 floors below the line where the collapse began I could see bursts or what looked like explosions in a straight line across the walls of the building. I asked if he was aware of this issue and would explain it in the course of the investigation. His response was intriguing. He got a bit excited and said "well we have to be careful, we want to avoid the word "explosions". There's the issue of pressure from above that could cause this and we're aware there is a line of smoke there which we are studying." I hope you're all getting the picture here.
Also worth noting, there were representatives there from 2 senators offices. I'm not sure which because they didn't make themselves known. Also, there were 2 reporters from the NY Times. I'm told that there was no cverage on the main local news station, NY1.
Thanks for handing in this long. Next, what to do? Now is the time to spread the word out to all our networks to contact NIST to pose the questions that need to be addressed. It can be done in the form of asking i such and such an issue has been brought up for consideration. Also, a "what if" question would work such as "what if the collapse of the towers cannot be explained by heat from the internal fires that occurred after the jet fuel burned out?" I'm sure the responses will speak volumes. Now back to FEMA. We need to know if those 436 pieces of steel was set aside by FEMA, or if NIST picked them at random from a pile. Also, we need to know if there has been forensic examinations for explosive residues. So hopefully you experts in this crowd will come forth, pose the questions to NIST I haven't considered here and report back to keep us posted. Here's the contact info.
