Photos from CarolMoore.net and reports from DC Indymedia February 9, 2005:So far, two people have been arrested protesting torture at the Supreme Court. Apparently, the First Amendment ends at its steps.
Today, there was a protest against Alberto "Abu Ghraib" Gonzales at the Supreme Court. About a dozen activists turned out, wearing black hoods and kneeling in front of the court in the positions that have become famous in the Guantanamo and other prisoner abuse scandals.
Two protesters, willing to risk arrest, walked up the steps and were promptly arrested, to shouts of "Shame!" and "Police state!" One young woman called out, "These people are being arrested for expressing opinions against the Bush administration's policies of torture! Is this justice?" Another yelled, "Go arrest Alberto Gonzales for war crimes!" Another witness writes:
Today at noon a non-violent protest of the Gonzalez promotion to Attorney General took place at the US Supreme Court. Several protestors wearing outfits including black hoods, evoking the shameful images of US torture victims at Abu Ghraib, knelt while other plain clothed protestors held posters and photographic images of torture victims of the Bush-Gonzalez policies.
Two protestors, Pete and Mitch, attempted to approach the US Supreme Court building. They were taken into custody by the Federal police guarding the court building. Pete was released. Mitch was not.
Later, a Filipino torture survivor of the US supported Marcos regime of the Phillipines spoke about his personal experience of being held and tortured under Marcos. He expressed his dire concern that the US may be headed in the direction that the Phillipines took under Marcos.
Later, Pete and David B. attempted again to go towards the Supreme Court building. They were arrested according to a police officer. They will be held, maybe overnight, and charged with violating Federal statute Title 40 according to the officer. They may be processed in two places and this is not considered a "pay and forfeit" situation according to a DAWN [DC Antiwar Network] protestor familiar with this matter. Pete and David will be taken to 415 4th Street, SW and held. It is not clear at this point if that is where Mitch is being taken or if Mitch's charges are the same as David's and Pete's. .....---
