Walt Whitman High School Black & White 2/7/2005: Military officials at the Carderock Division of Naval Surface Warfare Center installed a missile launcher on the Carderock base in December prompting anxiety among local residents.
As a part of Operation Noble Eagle under the North American Aerospace Defense Command orders . . . The missile launcher exists on the base to counter threats in the Washington metropolitan area, especially inbound air threats, [Ed Zieglar, public relations officer for the Naval District of Washington] said.
Six missiles, which comprise the launcher, serve as part of a multi-layered air defense program that includes aircraft and ground based radar, Zieglar said. The Navy installed the launcher right around December 3 or 4, he said.
Residents concerned about the missile launcher find it disconcerting that the weapon is so close to their homes...
Some residents, however, remain unaware of missile launcher’s presence. Malcolm Stevenson, president of the Carderock Springs Citizens Association and father of junior Montana, said he has not formed an opinion about the launcher’s location in his neighborhood because he does not know enough about it. ... : .....---
