Gosch-as-Gannon expose shakes Iowa media
Two Gannett sources tipped this writer off to the impending merger of the Des Moiines alt-weeklys, CityBeat and Pointblank in the light of the latter's searing expose of the Gosch-as-Gannon situation printed on the same day as Gannett's Des Moines Register whitewash of the story. One source provides more detail below. This site has questions out to the Pointblank... the alternative weekly paper in Des Moines, Pointblank, just printed a cover story on the subject that was much better. It's at www.pointblank-dm.com - for now anyway. Word came out yesterday that the paper shut down the day the story came out. The owner, Michael Gartner, is a high-profile, very powerful man in Iowa. He is head of the state board that disburses state funds to business to spur economic growth, he owns the AAA baseball team affiliated with the Chicago Cubs, worked at one point for the Des Moines Register and Tribune and won a Pulitzer prize and was once President of NBC News but was forced to resign when they ran a story about trucks that exploded when hit from the side, when in actuality they planted the explosives on the truck to make better footage. Gartner has apparently started a new company which purchased another weekly paper in town and will print under that name (City View) from now on, with the same staff from Pointblank. Except for the managing editor who wrote the Gannon ? Gosch piece. He was fired the day the story hit the street. .....---
