More than half of US House demands open ABLE DANGER hearings

Is Able Danger a limited-hangout or what? Rep. Curt Weldon seems to want to use the story of the closed-down military intel team tracking Atta as a pretext for the establishment of military-civilian "offensive" data-mining operation -- i.e., pro-actively arresting people the military deems dangerous.

But the story is still important because it tells us that this operation tracking the patsies was shut down so they could continue to be sheepdipped leading up to 9/11.

As released by U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon (Pa.) Nov 18:
    "The Honorable Donald Rumsfeld
    Secretary
    Department of Defense
    Pentagon
    Washington, DC 20301

    Dear Secretary Rumsfeld:

We the undersigned are formally requesting that you allow former participants in the intelligence program known as ABLE DANGER to testify in an open hearing before the United States Congress. Until this point, congressional efforts to investigate ABLE DANGER have been obstructed by Department of Defense insistence that certain individuals with knowledge of ABLE DANGER be prevented from freely and frankly testifying in an open hearing. We realize that you do not question Congress’s authority to maintain effective oversight of executive branch agencies, including your department. It is our understanding that your objection instead derives from concern that classified information could be improperly exposed in an open hearing. We of course would never support any activity that might compromise sensitive information involving national security. However, we firmly believe that testimony from the appropriate individuals in an open hearing on ABLE DANGER would not only fail to jeopardize national security, but would in fact enhance it over the long term. This is due to our abiding belief that America can only better prepare itself against future attacks if it understands the full scope of its past failures to do so.

On September 21, the Senate Committee on the Judiciary conducted a hearing on ABLE DANGER which Bill Dugan, Acting Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Oversight, certified did not reveal any classified information. Congressman Curt Weldon’s testimony at that hearing was largely based on the information that has been given to him by ABLE DANGER participants barred from open testimony by DOD. Their testimony would therefore closely mirror that of Congressman Weldon, who did not reveal classified information. Therefore we are at a loss as to how the testimony of ABLE DANGER participants would jeopardize classified information. Much of what they would present has already been revealed. Further refusal to allow ABLE DANGER participants to testify in an open congressional hearing can only lead us to conclude that the Department of Defense is uncomfortable with the prospect of Members of Congress questioning these individuals about the circumstances surrounding ABLE DANGER. This would suggest not a concern for national security, but rather an attempt to prevent potentially embarrassing facts from coming to light. Such a consideration would of course be an unacceptable justification for the refusal of a congressional request.

    Sincerely,

    Republican (144)

    Democrats (100)

Able Danger is important, not because it existed, but because of what it found.

Able Danger found Atta connection to CIA network in Brooklyn

Note: this data is about 2 months old now, some of the links may no longer be active. I am pretty sure that the TownHall - Heritage link to a Weldon speech has been moved, but I do not wish to spend the time finding the new url. Also, read The Washington Post blog: Early Warning, by Arkin. He has at least three solid sensible references to Able Danger, here's one

Any clown that has secret Parisan trysts with Ghoranifar, is an absolute ass, and shouldn't be taken seriously.

      ============

Curt Weldon has had secret meetings with Manucher Ghorbanifar and/or his agents on multiple occasions, most recently this past July. [1] These meetings were unofficial, and in violation of protocol which should have dictated his informing the Ambassador, as well as the CIA station chief before he met with these persons.

Ghorbanifar is considered by the CIA to be a prevaricator, utterly untrustworthy, and only out for personal gain. He was involved, in the Reagan Administration's giving modern weapons to Iran in their failures of paying ransom to secure the release of hostages, even though the stated policy of Reagan was to NOT negotiate with them. Ghorbanifar was the arms trader middleman, and in the first three transactions, one hostage was freed. Ghorbanifar was utilised in this fashion five times, even though he had failed CIA administered lie detectors tests before and after the transactions. The CIA has had a "burn" notice on him since before the weapons trades, because his information has so often proven to be false, and CIA operatives are banned from dealing with him. Michael Ledeen introduced Reagan's National Security Advisor, Robert McFarlane to him, and was glowingly complimentary describing him. During testimony given by McFarlane, and Oliver North in the Iran/Contra hearings, both men called Ghorbanifar a counterproductive asset. [2]

Ghorbanifar is also known to have used BCCI's services frequently, before they came crashing down. Surely you are aware of BCCI? [3]

In December, 2001, Larry Franklin (recently indicted for giving Israel classified documents), Harold Rhode(also implicated), who worked for Douglas Feith(quietly dismissed from the DOD) at the pentagon met with Ghorbanifar in Italy, along with Ledeen. This was also done without the Ambassador or the CIA station chief being informed. This caused friction and grief between the State Department, the CIA and the NeoCon Civilians at the Pentagon. Stephen Hadley, then Condoleezza Rice's chief deputy on the National Security Council was the person tasked with telling Ledeen and Feith to cease and desist the insanity. [4]

Weldon claims to have given Hadley his only copy of the Able Danger chart just after 911 [5], but gave a presentation at the NeoConservative think tank, The Heritage Foundation on 23 May, 2003, in which he displayed a large chart, claiming it showed the same evidence of 911 perpetrators. Atta was not specifically mentioned then.[6]

Lt.Col. Anthony Shaffer has admitted that he did not specifically see the Atta evidence himself. His evidence is hearsay. Shaffer also had his security clearance rescinded March 2004.[7]

Weldon's latest book frequently references an "Ali", he claimed was an ex-Iranian leader, who was really an associate of Ghorbanifar's, and who had political clout in the reign of the Shah of Iran. Bill Murray, the C.I.A. station chief in Paris, when Weldon was meeting an agent of Ghorbanifar's, obtaining information he put into a new book of his, publicly thrashed Weldon's allegations. He was supported by another former CIA agent, Reuel Marc Gerecht, who is rabidly pro war and an author often published in the National Review. [8]

Weldon response to Murray was a petty and vengeful attempt to have him investigated for revealing the identity of Ghorbanifar's agent, which Weldon claimed was classified. Murray stated that the person's identity was not classified, nor has he divulged his name, only that he is not one to be trusted. Weldon has called another Paris CIA station chief a liar. Former CIA head and founding member of Project for a New American Century, James Woolsey, defended Weldon. [9]

In July, 2005, when secretly meeting in Paris with Ghorbanifar and/or his agent, Weldon brought along House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Peter Hoekstra.[10] Lt.Col. Shaffer has stated that it was Hoekstra and House Majority leader, Dennis Hastert, who told him to go public with his Atta/Able Danger claim.[11] Hastert is himself facing a potential political career ending threat, if current quiet rumors gain mainstream attention.[12] Weldon has future political aspirations to chair the Armed Services Committee, and views his obtaining the Homeland Security Committee chair is an important step in that direction.[13] He needs powerful allies to achieve these goals. There is usually a quid pro quo relationship between allied politicians.

So to recap, Weldon isn't the brightest guy in the world, if he is meeting with Ghorbanifar without informing the CIA or the Department of State first, and is in fact acting with an authority, not rightfully his. He has shown himself to be vindictive, and desirous of holding more political power. He is closely aligned to the "neocons" in America. This is motive and opportunity to smear Hadley. The Congress presently laments the "Pentagon's" covering up of the Able Danger data, yet it is the President who is commander and Chief.
