The Louisiana Legislature should be commended for refusing to pass an ill-thought plan by State Sen. Walter Boasso to merge the levee boards of several parishes. With the evidence begininng to pile up that the levees and floodwalls, controlled by the Army Corps of Engineers, were sabotaged, more centralization is not what is needed. The fewer levers of power, the easier it will be in thr future for someone to push a button and flood the region again. Truly bold levee reform would involve reaping compensation from the Army Corps for the damage already wrought and the state of Louisiana seizing control of the levees so outside forces will not have as easy a time blowing the levees again. .....| Posted at 07:06 | PERMA-LINK |
